Dr. Chris Hena serves as the Director of Medicine for the United Methodist Church of Russia. Norma has been on special assignment for two years, working with the Nepalese people. The Enrights are missionaries in the poorest country of the world, with a population with a $10 per capita income. Their work is to act as Christ in the midst of poverty and suffering. They fly airplanes, operate clinics, provide medicine and proclaim the Good News in word and deed. They have been building the Nyembo Conference Center to minister to villagers. Both David and Kristin are ordained United Methodist pastors. They serve a recently reorganized Methodist congregation  at Kaunas, Lithuania. They are also reclaiming the Methodist presence and properties lost in Lithuania during the communist rule. Nancy Lightfoot

This native of Flint, was raised in Williamston and taught school in Midland. Nancy is the coordinator of the Klao Bible Translation and Literacy Program in Liberia. She heads the team which has completed the New Testament and about fifty percent of the Old Testament. She writes, “Watching the faces of older women in a Klao speaking congregation as they hear God’s word read to them in a language they understand is an experience one would not forget. Their faces verify the pastor’s comment: with this translation you don’t need to read any commentaries, you can understand it clearly just as it is. We could never have produced such a translation in our own strength.” Birthday: October 20.

The Garcias are missionaries at the EMANA Project in Chile. EMANA stands for Extension Metodista Al Niño Andino, or Methodist Extension to Andean Children. They serve the Aymara people in the rural villages of northern Chile. Luis’ responsibilities include overseeing the general operation of the project and coordinating the Kusayapu Agricultural Institute, a boarding high school of 120 students. Among other things, Janet coordinates work teams traveling to assist in the construction of the Institute.



Harold & Roberta Smith

Previously in Senegal, the Smiths are now at the Chiese Evangeliche Metodiste in Milan, Italy. It is a Methodist congregation within the Waldensian Church, the oldest continuous Protestant church in the world. The Methodist Church in Milan groups English speaking and Italian speaking Methodists. Their ministry is oriented toward a growing immigrant “guest worker” population, welcoming the stranger and sojourner. Their congregants come from the Philippines, Africa, and Eastern Europe. Rev. John Henry, a Detroit Conference clergy member, went from two successive appointments in the Marquette District to service as a pastor in the Alaska Missionary Conference, where he has been since 1988. He serves East Anchorage and North Star UM churches. He says, “The church should respond to poverty with compassion and concern. We have a biblical mandate to feed the hungry, clothe the naked and proclaim good news to the poor.” Mary is also a missionary, working with pre-school children with disabilities. Rev. Ken Vance and his spouse Debbie are both United Methodist missionaries in Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire). These natives of Indiana have been serving in Africa since 1984.
